Hurricane Katrina Relief

Jahworks.org extends its deepest condolences to the victims of Hurricane Katrina who lost their lives, their homes, and their livelihoods. Our prayers are with the affected, and we know that faith and spirit will endure to rebuild and overcome.

There are a lot of local efforts in California to help the victims in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama.

Benefit Concerts

Part or all of the proceeds from these events will go to a relief organization like the Red Cross or FEMA.

September 10--The Red Cross Bay Area chapter will accept donations at the Fillmore Farmers’ Market on behalf of the victims of the Hurricane Katrina disaster, with 100% of the proceeds donated to the Hurricane Relief Fund. 9:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. at the Fillmore Farmers Market, Fillmore Center Plaza, San Francisco, CA
September 10--"Music-A-Thon" to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina at The American Legion, Seaside, CA

September 10--"*69" The "Darkside" DVD Release Party/Hurrincane Katrina Relief Fundraiser at The Forbidden City, 1718 Vine St., Hollywood, CA

September 14--Sila and the Afrofunk Experience; 7 pm at the MADRONE LOUNGE, 500 Divisadero Street, San Francisco, CA

September 19--Club Dread presents "Hurricane Katrina Relief Benefit" with top reggae DJs at StudioZ, San Francisco, CA

Wednesdays--Now Accepting Donations To Support Victims Of Hurricane Katrina at "Passport Wednesdays" at Negril Village, 70 West 3rd St. between Thompson & LaGuardia, Greenwich Village, New York City, NY

Housing

To volunteer to host victims, please visit www.hurricanehousing.org. They need people within 300 miles or so of the affected areas.

Survivors Reunited--In order to help the survivors and those who are looking for them, Survivors Reunited has been created. The site reconnects survivors with those who seek them. Visit http://www.survivorsreunited.org

Time

One of the ways you can help is to donate time. The UC Berkeley administration has approved release time through paid administrative leave for staff who wish to volunteer through official hurricane relief agencies such as the American Red Cross and FEMA. For more info, visit here.

Ask your employer if volunteering is an option.

Proceeds or Matching Funds

September 11--Atomic Tattoos and Body Piercing and an alliance of Tattoo Studios nationwide will be donating all proceeds from tattoos and body piercing to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. For more info visit http://www.atomictattoos.com

Mt. Zion Records & Zion Judah are currently donating all profits from the sale of the "Divine Creation" album to the Red Cross for aid to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Click here to purchase the CD.

JFK University has a $2500 matching funds program. Donate whatever you can, and the university will match your amount up to a collective total of $2500. To donate, please write a check to the "American Red Cross" and mail it to: Theresa Korteum, Human Resources, JFK University, 100 Ellinwood Way, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523.

Many major websites have included donation links on their sites. Google, Expedia, Amazon.com are only a few that provide secure donations.

How to Help

Volunteer agencies provide a wide variety of services after disasters, such as clean up, childcare, housing repair, crisis counseling, sheltering and food. Below is a list of phone numbers compiled by Rep. Barbara Lee's (D) office, set up solely for cash donations and/or volunteers:
