For
his efforts on his ‘Dutty Rock’ album produced by VP Records/Atlantic
Records, Sean Paul has received three nominations for the 46th staging
of the Grammy Awards which will be held on Sunday, February 8, 2004 at
the Staples Centre in Los Angeles.
Sean Paul is nominated for the Best Reggae Album (‘Dutty Rock’),
Best New Artiste and Best Male Rap Solo Performance for ‘Get Busy’
(‘Dutty Rock’).
The DJ has made an indelible mark on the international scene, notably
as an undiluted dancehall act, which is a big difference from the earlier
crossover efforts by his colleagues.
Sean Paul first shook the world with the song 'Gi Mi Di Light' which got
heavy rotation on the North American radio stations. With heavy backing
from VP Records, he received a lot of promotion, including the well hyped
music video for the song directed by Little X which was a hit on BET and
MTV.
He also scored with other singles from the album, among them 'Get Busy',
'Like Glue' and more recently ‘Baby Boy’ with R&B singer
Beyonce and ‘I'm Still In Love’ featuring New York based Sasha,
which have made their mark on the Billboard Charts. The ‘Dutty Rock’
album went platinum, to date reportedly selling over 4 million copies.
The DJ from the Dutty Cup Clan also got added ratings after being nominated
in the Best New Artiste category at the BET Awards which was eventually
won by rapper 50 Cent.
Sean Paul also received two nominations at the MTV Video Music Awards
in the categories Best New Artiste In a Video and Best Dance In A Video
where he lost out to 50 Cent and Justin Timberlake, respectively.
For the 2004 Grammys in the Best Reggae Album category, Sean Paul's ‘Dutty
Rock’ will be competing with ‘No Holding Back’ (VP/Atlantic)
by Wayne Wonder, ‘Friends For Life’ (VP/Atlantic) by Buju
Banton, ‘Free Man’ (Burning Music Production) by Burning Spear,
and ‘Ain't Giving Up’ (Shananche) by Third World.
Notably, reggae/dancehall distribution giant VP Records has received five
nominations as a result of their recording artistes Sean Paul, Wayne Wonder
and Buju Banton for the Best Reggae Album category. VP also figure in
Sean Paul's nomination for Best Male Rap Solo Performance for the song
