MUSIC NEWS

"Slogans" is the first new official Bob Marley track to be released in decades. It is believed that Marley recorded the song in a Miami bedroom in 1979. The acoustic demo was revisited by the reggae legend's sons Stephen and Ziggy with overdubbed instruments, including guitar by Eric Clapton. "Slogans" is included on the newly released greatest hits package "Africa Unite: The Singles Collection." In addition to "Slogans," the collection features two new remixes: "Stand Up Jamrock (Ashley Beedle Remix)," and the wil.i.am (Black Eyed Peas) remix of "Africa Unite." For a limited time, the "Slogans" video can be viewed here.

This year's Vibe Magazine "Boomshot" Award went to the youngest Marley child. Damian Marley has been tearing up the charts with his single "Welcome to Jamrock." His album of the same name was running head to head on the charts with Sean Paul's "The Trinity." The other Boomshot nominated songs were "Can't Satisfy Her" by I Wayne; "I've Got Your Man" by Lady Saw; "Tempted to Touch" by Rupee; and "Footprints" by T.O.K. Damian Marley performed his hit live on the awards show which was broadcast in the United States on the UPN Network.

The popular Jamaican radio station, IRIE-FM has banned Jah Cure's music from their playlist. The station officially made the decision after staff members received death threats cautioning them not to play anymore of the singer's music. Jah Cure, born Siccature Alcock, has been serving a 15 year sentence since April 26, 1999, for two counts of rape, robbery with aggravation, and illegal possession of firearm, all arising from the same incident.

Ce'Cile finished rapping up the video shoot for her newest single "Woman Tings" produced by Richard "Shams" Brownie on the Baddis rhythm. Marley archivist and Beat Magazine Founder Roger Steffens recently released the definitive Wailers discography. For the first time ever, all the recordings made by Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Peter Tosh have been compiled into a definitive discography which details each track – identifying all the singers and musicians, engineers, producers, studios, master tape information, matrix numbers of all the seven-inch records, plus the actual recording dates of each song. The book is an absolute must-have for every serious collector of Bob Marley and the Wailers, containing a treasure trove of new anecdotal information that even the most casual Wailers fan will find of great value. The book also contains stunning photographs by Kate Simon, hundreds of album cover images, and extensive additional essays.

In other book news, the second edition of Relations Between Africans and African Americans: Misconceptions, Myths and Realities (National Academic Press: 2005) by Godfrey Mwakikagile is available now. The book addresses the relations between Africans and African Americans and tackles such provocative questions like how do Africans see black Americans, and how do black Americans see them? How are Africans accepted by black people in the United States? And how are black Americans accepted in Africa? Do Africans see American blacks as fellow Africans, cousins or distant cousins, or just as Americans? For more information, go to: http://www.panafricanbooks.com/
