Richie Stephens Pay Tribute to Mothers

By Kevin Jackson

Singer Richie Stephens is gearing up to give his all, when he performs on Buzz Productions’ "Power of Love: A Tribute to Mothers" showcase, which will be held on May 12 at the Constant Spring Golf Club, in Constant Spring, Jamaica. Headlining the show is veteran R&B star Luther Vandross.

Stephens, who shot onto the scene in the late 1980s with the El Paso hit "Buff Baff," has carved out an enviable niche for himself among fans of lovers’ rock, reggae and dancehall. With seven albums released to date, fans can look forward to another collection before the end of the year.

Mother’s Day is special to Richie for a number of reasons. He has memories of his mother’s struggles raising him on her own. His mother is very special to him, and in paying tribute to her, he recorded the song "Pot of Gold." The song was recently released and features deejay Bounty Killer, who adds his own brew of spice to the engaging track.

"’Pot of Gold’ is one of the greatest gifts that I can give to my mother. The words mean love," the singer said recently.

"Pot of Gold" which is the name of Richie’s record label and recording studio, is not the first tribute from the singer to mothers. Back in 1996 he recorded a remake of Skylark’s "Wildflower," a track that borders on similar sentiments.

"’Pot of Gold’ is just the icing on the cake. I am coming prepared for the show to deliver my original songs as well as some cover versions. I intend to leave the mothers in the audience fully entertained," the singer disclosed.

Among Stephens’ hit singles over the years are "Winner," "Weakness for Sweetness," "Slop Dem," "By Your Side," "Legacy" with Mad Cobra, "Body Slam" with Patra, "Maniac" with Bounty Killer, "Problem" and "Forever in Your Eyes."
