bushman"Music to I’n’I is life. Music is everything I ever think of, and ever want to be around. Music is from thence, now and forever. My purpose in life is to enlighten my people to the highest of heights. I use the music to do that."
—Bushman

Reggae has experienced a resurgence of "roots and culture" music in recent years. Out of this movement, numerous young singers have emerged, seeking to bring about an awareness of the social, political and spiritual strife in the world today. With his hard work, heartical lyrics and powerful message, Bushman - the "Medicine Man of Music," shows that he is one such bredren.

bushmanBorn Dwight Duncan in a rural St. Thomas village, Bushman learned to sing in school and at the church choir he attended with his family as a young child. During this time, Bushman was introduced to the Rastafari way of life. As a teenager, Dwight was a selector for the Black Star Line sound system under the name of "Junior Melody." He spent months making long journeys into Kingston until he finally caught a break in 1995, an audition with Steely & Clevie. His very first singles "Grow Your Natty" and "Call The Hearse" earned him several "Best New Artist" nominations in 1996 and led to his debut release "Nyah Man Chant" the following year.

bushmanThe success of his initial recordings inspired Bushman to further develop his ability to convey his conscious vision to the world through his musical lyrics. It was during this period that Bushman linked up with Lloyd "King Jammy" James, for whom he recorded the hits "Fire Bun A Weak Heart," "Mr. Gunis" and "Worries and Problems" which appear on his 1999 Greensleeves release ‘Total Commitment."

Though just 28 years of age, Bushman displays great maturity and a deep overstanding of the world with his newest album ‘Higher Ground’. This Greensleeves release features 16 crucial selections, which personify reggae’s movement towards contemporary roots music. Bushman sanctifies the levity of Rastafari on "Fire Pon A Deadas," and pleas for a better tomorrow on the cultural masterpiece "Yadd Away Home."

bushmanBushman made his very first appearance in California performing at the 8th annual Sierra Nevada World Music Festival on June 24, 2001. During this riveting performance, Bushman showed an incredible ability to combine conscious roots music with dancehall riddims that had the crowd clamoring for more.

This 25-minute Real Audio interview, was recorded in advance of the Musical Medicine Man’s performance at SNWMF, and is presented here along with images from the festival and his albums to date. During this interview, Bushman discusses his introduction into the reggae fraternity, and livication to Rastafari. He talks about his abundant musical works, including the many singles that do not appear on his albums. Bushman also reveals a deep understanding of the social and economic conditions facing Jamaicans, proclaiming "To keep the people unaware and illiterate about the situation that make them a victim of poverty, is the strategy of mystery Babylon within this time." He has an air of dignity and reverence that shows a wisdom well beyond his years.

Bushman also talks about his desire to take his music to the next level, by touring with his own band, while modestly recognizing the need for patience and persistence. He has a passion for music and life radiates in his performances, in his reasonings, and in his musical works. His sense of humbleness and positivity are certain to carry Bushman to a Higher Ground.
